Rugby for Parents
Hello and welcome to the mini rugby section of our club. Here are some quick questions and answers about mini rugby.
Is there a good age for children to start playing Rugby? Children can start playing tag rugby as soon as they are old enough to start school. This can also be played in crèches where it and assist in hand-eye coordination in the development of the child.
Please could you list all the necessary equipment a child would require to get started playing Rugby? In South Africa the rules are different from the rest of the world. Children do not need any boots and plays barefoot and only require boots when at U14. The only equipment or apparel required is gums shield a short and a T-Shirt.
How much should a parent expect to pay for lessons? We do not charge per lesson but require a player to contribute R 200.00 per annum to cover expenses of purchasing balls, tags & assist in covering possible transportation costs
How can parents identify a good teacher/club (qualifications etc)? All Ennerdale Rugby Football Club coaches are IRB and "Boksmart" accredited and qualified to coach the game and administer all drills safely.
To become proficient, how many hours per week would you suggest a child should practice? This depends on the child, but generally speaking for children under the age of 10, 1 – 2 hours per week at the club session would be enough. The club conducts coaching clinics every Saturday from 09am to 12am.
Although it will vary from child to child how long does it normally take for a child to become competent in this sport? An average athletic child would be able to enjoy and fully participate in tag rugby after 2 – 3 hours coaching.
Can I as a parent get involved in this format of rugby?
Absolutely, in fact we encourage you to do so.

1. Enroll your child in the programme
2. Accompany your child to the clinics. You might like to become a mini rugby coach / referee
3. Volunteer to assist with supervising youngsters
4. Assist with acquiring sponsors
5. Encourage your neighbours to send their children
6. Accompany the teams when they play either home or away
7. Accompany & supervise the children on visits to Coca Cola Park
