FAQ

When was the club established?

The club was established on 21 March 2006

What was the motivation behind establishing a club?

The development programme in our schools was producing lots of players playing rugby for other clubs outside Ennerdale. Many of these players were constantly complaining about the manner they were treated by these “foreign” clubs.

Ennerdale schools have produced 12 players for the GLRU Craven Week teams as well as numerous coaches and managers for these teams.

Are there any plans to sustain a healthy, competitive player base?

Yes. We are conducting regular coaching clinics on Saturday mornings before we have to play our scheduled fixtures.

We are looking at establishing a schools league for the schools in the area. Initially it will be a tag league since the majority of the schools are new to rugby.

The league will be expanded to full contact rugby by 2013 incorporating ages from 7 – 18.

In order to achieve the long term sustainability of the club we will be embarking on a serious & vigorous campaign to attract sponsors for different programmes within the club.

Is the club affiliated to any umbrella organisation?

Yes, we are affiliated to the Golden Lions Rugby Union [GLRU].

Who can be contacted to verify your affiliation?

Mr. Pieter Visser, Manager Clubs, at the GLRU on 011 4022960 or by email on pieterv@glru.co.za

Apart from your affiliation to the GLRU, are you otherwise legally compliant?

Yes. We are a registered with the Department of Social Development, NPO 055 / 975 with SARS for tax exemption, PBO 930027126

Could you list some of your achievements to date.

We won the inaugural Ingonyama League title in 2008 and in 2009 both our teams again qualified for the play offs. Our under 19 team successfully defended their title while our senior team lost in the semi finals to the eventual champions.

Our constitution was approved by the Department and we are the first  independent / open club in the GLRU to acquire an NPO & PBO number.

Where is the club situated?

We are situated in Ennerdale, approximately 45 km south of the Jhb CBD, in Region G of the City of Johannesburg.

We play our matches on the municipal fields in Katz Street, Ennerdale Ext.9 opposite the municipal offices / behind the SAPS offices].

What are your current, biggest challenges?

Our challenges can be categorised as follows:

1. Facilities

2. Logistical

3. Player recruitment & retention

4. Managerial

5.   Financial

For more information regarding the above please send an email to perry@ennerdalerfc.org.za or ranleigh@ennerdalerfc.org.za.

How are club activities funded?

The main stay of our financial assistance is the GLRU. All clubs in the President’s League receive a sum of R 80 000.00 per annum to cover operational expenses. This grant, however well intended,, only covers 70 % of the expenses for the teams playing in the league, i.e. 1st, 2nd & under 20 teams.

In order for us to do our development work as a club, we need to find the resources required from other sources such as the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation [GSACR]. To date we’ve received one grant  from GSACR in 2008. Subsequent applications were unsuccessful. The NLDTF have indicated that our application was received and a reference number issued but we’ve had no further feedback from them but remain hopeful.

FURY Motor Group also assist us to the tune of R 11 500.00 p.a. This assistance takes the form of playing kit and shorts, t-shirts and kit bags. In addition we receive raffle books, with the potential of raising R 25 000.00 for the club, to sell. The club gets to keep all the funds generated via this scheme.

How are financial matters dealt with in your club?

The club has a banking account with FNB. All funds are deposited into this account. The Club Treasurer is responsible for handling all financial matters. Most of our transactions are done electronically at this stage.

Financials are checked by an independent, external bookkeeper. The financials are submitted to the Department of Social Development and the GLRU for their perusal and approval.

Failure to comply with this stipulation could lead to the club losing our NPO & PBO registrations as well as expulsion from the GLRU.

Talk to us about your membership requirements.

We have divided our membership into different categories. The categories are:

1.    Player membership. This category is for young men and women who still wish to play this wonderful game of rugby football. This membership will cost each member R 300.00 per annum from 2011 onwards.

2. Ordinary membership. This is the category of individuals / institutions that wish to assist the club by volunteering their services as a coach, organiser, referee, first aider etc. This membership will cost R 100.oo p.a and members are most welcome to contribute / donate to the club.

3.    Supporters. Members of the community that want to support the club by making donations, assisting with fundraising, recruiting members and looking after the general well-being of all the members of the club etc.

I’ve heard that the club is only for scholars

That is incorrect. Initially, the majority of our players were schoolboys who have since completed their schooling and are now young men either studying or working.

Our school programme is still in place though.

Can parents and members of the community become embers even though they do not know rugby?

Yes! We encourage this. It is another activity that families can do together. Those parents / teachers who’d like to participate in the programme can make themselves available to perform the less technical duties such as registration of members, keeping scores etc. Others can make use of the training we offer in refereeing, coaching & general sport administration.
